This is an ancient rhyme which probably dates to the early 1500's. 'Hey Diddle Diddle' was a new dance, according to Thomas Preston, usually accompanied by a tune on the fiddle. People who enjoy reading more meaning into nonsense rhymes have suggested that the cat is Elizabeth I and the dog is Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester whom she referred to as 'my little lap dog'.
