First appearing in print in 1881, this rhyme supposedly makes referrence to the Great Plague. The 'roses' refers to one of the symptoms of the plague, a rosey rash. It was thought that herbs and spices, ('posies') would offer protection from infection. 'Husha' or 'Hasha' refers to the sneezing, a symptom which usually occurred before death.
